Difference Between Garnet Sand And Quartz Sand

In the current sandblasting field, garnet sandblasting abrasives are more and more favored by users, and the use of garnet sand is also growing. There are many materials that can be used as sandblasting abrasives. In addition to garnet sand, there are quartz sand, brown corundum, glass beads, copper slag, coal slag, etc. Before garnet sand was widely used, quartz sand was the more commonly used abrasive, so why was it replaced by garnet sand? Next, we will introduce the relative advantages of garnet sand.

The principles of sand blasting and water knife sand are similar, both of which use mixed high-speed water and garnet sand abrasive to operate on the surface of objects. The hardness of garnet abrasive is relatively high in sand blasting, with Mohs hardness of 7.5-8, while the wear hardness of quartz sand is about 6. Therefore, compared with the impact strength of garnet sand, it is difficult for quartz sand to achieve sand blasting effect.

At the same time, the shape of garnet sand is a rhombic 12hedron with sharp corners, forming a certain roughness on the surface of the sandblasted object, which is also conducive to the adsorption of paint, so as to achieve better rust removal effect. Moreover, the rust removal effect of quartz sand is relatively limited, and serious dust phenomenon will cause harm to workers and the environment during the sand blasting process.
