Types of Waterjet Cutting Garnet

Waterjet Cutting Garnet 60 Mesh
This is a type of abrasive used in waterjet cutting systems. It refers to a specific size or grade of garnet sand, with 60 mesh indicating the particle size. Garnet 60 mesh is suitable for high-volume cutting operations. It is a natural mineral mined from rivers, beaches, or rocks and is ideal for waterjet cutting due to its low chloride content.

Waterjet Cutting Garnet 80 Mesh
This is a high-performance abrasive ideal for sandblasting and water jet applications. Perfect for new steel preparation and mill scale removal, this #80 mesh garnet delivers a 1–2 mil profile, low dust generation, and high productivity, exceeding 20 m2/hr on mill scale.

Waterjet Cutting Garnet 120 Mesh
It is a high performance general purpose garnet, this grade can be used for waterjet cutting and very delicate blasting works. Garnet 120 mesh is abrasive which delivers the most efficient and cost-effective blast cleaning on most surfaces that have Very low rust or very thin coatings. It has a broad range of applications for surface preparation and waterjet cutting.

Functions of Waterjet Cutting Garnet
Hardness
Waterjet operators need to balance cutting speed and component wear, and garnet does that perfectly. A soft abrasive extends nozzle life but slows down cutting. An abrasive that is too hard offers fast cutting but quickly erodes the nozzle. Garnet measures 7.5-8.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, which effectively balances the need to cut quickly and provide reasonable component life.
Density
Low-density particles don' t pack enough punch for efficient cutting. Those that are too dense can' t achieve the necessary acceleration through the water stream. A particle density of four times the weight of water, or 4.0, is considered optimal, and that' s what you get with garnet.
Toughness
Sometimes referred to as friability, particle toughness plays a direct role in how well an abrasive performs. The ideal waterjet abrasive has a measured rate of breakdown and produces sharp, angular cutting edges. Garnet, with its semi-friable nature and conchoidal fracture, fills the need.
Particle Shape
Garnet also has the advantage of coming in two distinct varieties: hard rock and alluvial. Garnet features angular grains with the sharpest edges, which cut deep, straight, and fast and provide the most precise edge finishes. Garnet features sub-rounded grains like beach sand for standard cutting applications.

Hardness of Waterjet Cutting Garnet
Waterjet cutting garnet typically has a Mohs hardness of around 7 - 7.5.
This high hardness makes it suitable for effectively abrading and cutting various materials in waterjet cutting applications.
Process for Waterjet Cutting Garnet
Abrasive waterjet cutting is a cold cutting (non-thermal) process operated by a waterjet machine. It uses natural garnet abrasives combined with high-pressure water to cut almost any material. This process produces a smooth cutting surface with no slag or heat affected zones. The amount of pressure used will determine the speed of the water stream. The ultra high pressure pump within the waterjet systemcan generate between 3800 to 6000 bar (55k to 87k).
The high-pressure water, which is typically generated at 3.8 litres per minute, flows through an orifce with a diameter between 0.10 - 0.33 mm (0.0039 - 0.012 in) into the cutting head, creating a jet stream of up to 1,000 m/s. At the same time, garnet abrasives are fed into the focusing tube via an abrasive inlet andcombined with the high-pressure jet stream. It transforms into a powerful cutting tool that can cut thick metal (up to 30cm or 12 inches) into any shape.
Usage of Waterjet Cutting Garnet
Garnet is ground to a variety of sizes to be used as an abrasive. Garnet sandpaper was the original application of this mineral. It is also used to make a number of similar products, including sanding belts, discs, and strips.
Today, the vast majority of garnet is used as an abrasive blasting material, for water filtration, in a process called water jet cutting, and to make abrasive powders.
