Garnet is a type of ruby whose name is derived from the Latin word "granatus" because its crystals resemble the seeds of a pomegranate in the rock. The crystallization habit of garnet belongs to the isaural system hexaoctahedral crystal class, the common monomorphism is rhombohedral dodecahedron d{110}, tetragonal trisoctahedron n{211} and the conic garnet of the two has moderate hardness (6.5~7.5), high melting point (1170~1280℃), good chemical stability and other characteristics, and the density is 3.5~4.3g/cm3. Refractive index 1.714~1.887, color is different, purple red, red blood, dark red, brown red, yellow green, bright green, black and so on. The fracture is shell-like, greasy and shiny, and generally opaque.
Garnet Main traditional uses:
1. Large granular garnet (>3MM)
2. Medium granular garnet (0.10mm~1.5mm)
The garnet is used for sandblasting, rust removal and water jet cutting with its stable hardness and high toughness.
Garnet can be used as heavy medium, oil drilling mud weighting agent and water filter material by using its characteristic of heavy ratio.
The use of garnet chemical stability and toughness, acting as a filler for rubber and paint coatings using garnet's ability to resist weathering and chemical composition, used for building airport runways, wear-resistant floors, highway anti-skid roads using garnet beautiful color, the production of real stone paint, exterior wall paint
3. Garnet powder
Used for grinding optical instruments, semiconductors, glass and ceramic products, polishing parts made of soft metal, cleaning oil on the surface of mechanical transportation equipment.
There are six types of garnet, including iron and aluminum, magnesium and aluminum, manganese and aluminum, calcium and aluminum, calcium and iron, calcium and chromium, among which iron and aluminum garnet has the greatest hardness and good chemical stability, and is a high-grade natural abrasive.
